This is according to Wikipedia. The first British newspaper to publish a crossword was the Sunday Express in 1924.
Incidentally ... many people seem to prefer the term "crossword puzzle" to "crossword" alone. I have always tended to use the latter, shorter, term, and I was interested to find that Wikipedia prefers it also.
